Last week, my friend Lorene called to ask me a question, and we wound up talking for almost two hours, as girls do. We were waxing nostalgic about the ‘90s, when we wore flannel and subscribed to Sassy and used AOL Free Trial CD-ROMS as drink coasters. Then I was like, “Remember the haircuts?” There was a period between 1994 and 2001 where the hottest girls in America— not just alt girls, but mainstream leading lady types— had SUPER SHORT HAIR. I told Lorene that I have a theory about why every ‘90s trend has made a comeback with Gen Z except widespread pixie mania. “It’s never going to happen,” I said, “and I’ll tell you why.”
